Our story
We thought it would be good to share a bit about our story and the background to how the church came about.
Midge and I first met while serving in Hong Kong in ’92. I thought Midge was amazing, and my proposal line was, “I have no money, just a guitar, some books, and a call from God on my life. Will you marry me?” We were married in Malaysia the following year. After 31 years of marriage, I’ve discovered she’s even more amazing than I initially thought.
In ’94, we attended Faith Bible College, NZ. Over the years, we’ve always served in the churches we’ve been part of. We’ve lived by faith for 13 years, started a church in Cambodia, ministered in the slums, and have been blessed with two amazing sons, a wonderful daughter-in-law, and an awesomely cute granddaughter.
Our heart is to raise leaders and build churches like we see in Acts; where every member feels a deep sense of unconditional love, belonging, and purpose; where God’s Word is central, and His Spirit is Lord.
After returning to the UK from Cambodia in 2011, we spent several years seeking to understand how we fit within the church and how to fulfil the call of God on our lives. We soon realized God was leading us down a different path; to build a “new wineskin,” in which He could pour the new wine of His Spirit. (Luke 5:37-39). Intimacy, we felt, was a key ingredient. Growing in intimacy with God and one another.
After prayer and fasting, we felt God speak clearly to us through Revelation 3:7-8: “See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name.”
So, in 2023, Midge and I, along with some friends started a church in our home. Since then, we’ve grown and now meet at The Halo Centre. We are currently a small group of friends on a journey toward becoming a registered charity. Steve and Midge lead the church alongside a great team.
We are deeply moved by the truths that our God is “…amazingly compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness…who forgives our lawless deeds, and wipes out every sin for His name’s sake…who rejoices over His people with singing and dancing, crowning them with love, and bestows His holiness on us as a free gift. He is the eternal Servant King who made all things and for whom all things were made.
For truly, there is only one name under heaven given to man by which we must be saved…the name of Jesus. For He alone is worthy… and every knee will bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord Almighty. We live to see Him lifted up and gloried as we walk by His Spirit.” (Exodus 34:6, Romans 4:7-8, 1 John 2:12, Zephaniah 3:17, Psalm 103:4, Hebrews 10:14, John 13, Acts 4:12, Colossians 1:16 &17, Rom 14:11, Romans 8).
If God values His people so highly, we seek to love and serve them to the best of our ability.
We believe the best is yet to come. We are expectant that God will pour out His Spirit once again, just as He did in Acts 2, and at Azusa Street, and on the Isle of Lewis, and during the Welsh revivals, etc. We trust He will “comfort those who mourn, strengthen the weak, heal the diseased, bring back the scattered, and seek the lost” (Isaiah 61, Ezekiel 34:4).
If you’d like to connect, please feel free to reach out for an informal chat or simply join us on a Sunday. We’d love to hear your story and see how we can serve you.
With love, Steve and Midge
